Deonar residents claim BMC burning excess waste

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Mumbai Posted On: Nov 16, 2012
The residents complained that they are facing health issues as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) burning excess waste violating rules. However, the BMC has denied the allegation by residents.
With no other option in hand, BMC had to shift overflowing waste from Kanjurmarg to Deonar as High Court temporarily banned dumping waste at Kanjumarg after Vanashakti, an NGO firm has filed a case against them. The BMC has denied the allegations and will move to the court to defer the order.
The city generates around 6,500 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 2,000-2,500 metric tonnes of debris. The Kanjurmarg dump yard used to receive about 1,500 metric tonnes and Deonar the remaining 5,500 metric tonnes of waste. The civic administration had asked Airports Authority of India to permit them to raise the height of the dumping ground from 35 to 45 meters.
