Disallow the sale of fire-crackers exceeding 125 dB
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has directed to disallow the sale of fire-crackers exceeding 125 decibels (dB).Following the recent amendment to the Noise Pollution (Control and Regulation) Act,State pollution control board has directed the city police and other enforcement agencies to disallow the sale of fire-crackers exceeding 125 decibels (dB). These include atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, chain crackers and Chinese crackers.
KSPCB’s move is the result of a directive by the Centre’s Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to fireworks manufacturers to reduce the decibel level of crackers. KSPCB plans to set up sound and air monitoring centres at 11 places across the city on five days – Nov 2 (pre-Diwali), Nov 5, 6, 7 (Diwali) and Nov 10 (post- Diwali).
As per KSPCB’s findings over the last four years, respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) levels have been consistently rising above the national ambient air quality norms.Equipped with more teeth, KSPCB is determined to ensure a pollution-free Diwali this year. The board has also activated its dormant enforcement wing by appointing a senior scientific officer to coordinate with its regional officers.
During festival seasons, BP patients are the worst affected, apart from the trauma caused to the elderly, heart patients and animals. The Bangalore citizen may be spared from the ear-splitting experience of bombs and crackers on this Diwali. The KSPCB is determined to ensure a pollution-free Diwali this year.
