DMRC focuses on Jaipur metro, may delay elevated road project
Jaipur – Since the deadline to run Jaipur metro is June 30, 2013, the entire focus of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is shifted to complete the project before deadline. This may result in delaying the construction of proposed four-lane elevated road-cum-metro track project on Ajmer Road.
For the first time in India, DMRC is constructing double-storey elevated road and Metro track project. This elevated road is proposed to relieve the traffic flow from Ajmer to Jaipur and vice-versa. The Ajmer- Jaipur road cannot be widened as the road is already narrow. On the other side, it is expected that the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project may also get delayed by 10 months.
According to an official, there will be two levels including ground level. Normal traffic will flow on the ground level and the proposed four lane elevated road will be constructed to ease the traffic on the highway. The metro track will be constructed on the second level.
As per department sources, the metro train and traffic was supposed to be opened together on Ajmer Road. Since the civil construction of Metro corridor is delayed by six months, officials are now focusing on metro before elevated road. It is expected that the elevated track will get operational after the completion of metro project.
A Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) official confirmed that the BRTS project in Jaipur will be taken up after the metro is operational. He added that work related to metro project and BRTS corridor cannot be carried out simultaneously.
The length of elevated road from Ajmer to Jaipur will be 4.63 km and that from Jaipur to Ajmer will be around 2.95 km. Phase I of Jaipur Metro starts from Mansarovar and connects to Badi Chaupar through Civil Lines and Chandpole. The metro track to be constructed on the second level which will run from Sodala to Civil Lines covering a distance of 1.6 km.
The completion of entire civil construction work of Phase I (9.25 km) is now the biggest challenge for DMRC. According to the sources DMRC is planning to complete the civil construction work of the elevated track from Mansarovar to the railway station.
Meanwhile, the DMRC has applied to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to carry out inspection work for trial runs. All mandatory documents have been submitted in this regard and they are expecting to get the approval soon. The Jaipur metro will soon have the trail runs by April or May 2013.
