Kolkata Metro fares may rise
Kolkata – Although the Union Railway Minister announced no hike in fares of Kolkata metro but there are good indications from the board to restructure the fare. There is less than three weeks left to declare Railway Budget.
Now it is entirely upon the railway minister to declare this by issuing a circular in the next few days or wait till the announcement of budget on February 25 , 2013.
Kolkata metro is suffering heavy operational loss from past many years. Thus the metro officials demanded for fare hike and the expected rise in fare is by minimum rupee one. If there is any hike it would be according to the zones in Kolkata city.
According to an official from Delhi, the fare restructuring committee proposed a hike of Rs 2 per zone. He added that the north-south metro network which is divided in six ticketing zones may be clubbed into three zones. This metro network covers a distance of 25.13 km.
The minimum and maximum fare for these three zones would be Rs 4 and Rs 14 respectively leading a fare structure of Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 15. This will automatically bring increase in fares without affecting commuters too much.
Thus all fares are balanced with the multiples of five. The last fare hike said that the minimum fare for suburban areas will be Rs 5. Commuters will be charged Rs 5 for the distance whose fare is Rs 5. and Rs 10 for the distance whose fare is Rs 7, Rs 8 or Rs 9.
Following the same logic, commuters who are paying Rs 4 and Rs 6 for zone one and two would have to pay Rs 5. The same logic applies for third and fourth zone i. e commuters who are paying Rs 8 and Rs 10 would have to pay Rs 10. For fifth and sixth zone, commuters paying Rs 12 and Rs 14 will have to pay Rs 15.
This logical increase in fare would let many passengers to pay one rupee less and maximum Rs 3 more. If such is the case then many metro officials would be happy. Metro officials feel that this hike is very reasonable. Many people are also demanding for improved services which cannot be given unless and until the fares are increased.
