E-meters a must from March in Mumbai
The state government told the Bombay High Court that no autos or taxis in Mumbai without e-meters will be allowed from March 1, 2013.
Earlier the court approved a deadline of March 31, 2013 for autos and April 30, 2013 for taxis. However, the state government said that they are planning to pre-pone the dates for conversion of mechanical meters into electronic devices. The state will try to complete the process by February and the lawyers are stuck to the deadline by the state.
The High Court directed to complete the recalibration of taxi and meters as per the new fares in Mumbai by January 15, 2013 but the deadline has been extended to January 31, 2013. Till now 0nly 13,000 auto meters have been updated.
The government said that around 16,000 taxis and 60,000 autos are yet to get e-meters and it had only three centres to recalibrate the meters.
S S Shinde, Assistant government pleader said that the government should set up two more center if they want the work to get completed by the given time period.
