Five per cent rebate for properties with RWH systems
An amendment to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Act was made in August 2009 to make rainwater harvesting system (RWH) mandatory for new constructions and a nine-month deadline for existing buildings but there was confusion as the specifics were not clear. The government now cleared the air by issuing the necessary guidelines that include the RWH models.
According to a survey by BWSSB and water experts, 56,000 litres can be harvested in a 20 ftx 30 ft property. Bangalore gets an estimated 970 mm of rainfall every year. According to the BWSSB officials, more than 21,000 building owners out of 54,000 who are identified to own buildings in an area of more than 2,400 sq ft in the city have already installed the RWH systems.
To encourage citizens, a five per cent rebate in property tax is being given for properties with RWH systems.Since August 2009, BBMP had stopped sanctioning the design plan for new buildings and has not approved water and sanitary connections unless they had RWH facility.
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Act was amended to make rain water harvesting (RWH) compulsory in the city. The state government published guidelines for installing the RWH systems and a five per cent rebate is being given for properties with RWH Systems.
RWH MODELS
- Roof-based RWH,involves installing pipes to carry water from the terrace and other open spaces in the building to the tank or an open well.
- Land-based RWH involves using appropriate ground water recharge structures or pits depending on the nature of the soil.
- Recharging through open well or bore well involves diverting rain water to an open well. But the water is filtered, stored and stabilised in a sedimentation tank before it is transferred to the well.
