FSI policy to be reviewed for more affordable housing in Mumbai
The Central Government has suggested the state authorities to review the floor space index (FSI) policy again to meet the affordable housing demand in Mumbai.
In a city like Mumbai where 50% of the population stays in slums, it becomes very difficult for them to afford houses near workplaces. Due to which, Union housing minister has said that affordable housing should now be given the infrastructure status to facilitate more stock of affordable properties in Mumbai for the urban population.
Furthermore, he added that the FSI policy has to be amended to boost the affordable housing stock in Mumbai. Also, the policy for providing Infrastructure Status to affordable housing schemes is on the cards to improve the urban housing scenario in the city.
In the last two decades, India has witnessed rapid urbanization which is forecasted to increase further.
Also, there is rehabilitation of slums in Mumbai on the cards and proposal has been made regarding the same. With a sizeable percentage of the city’s shanties situated on such lands, the state has been pushing for a redevelopment policy for these.
A seperate policy framework under the Rajeev Awas Yojana (RAY) has been demanded for the state, since the existing guidelines were not sustainable in Mumbai, Thane and Pune.
