3,000 housing societies in Mumbai to get affected by government’s resolution

Housing societyA state government resolution which was issued five years back in Mumbai has come into limelight again. The same resolution now is going to affect over 3,000 housing societies in the city which stand on the land of the collector’s office allotted decades ago.

Most of these societies were built in the 1960s and the land on which they are standing were given on long lease on a condition that they pay the ongoing market rates.

One of the housing societies in Chembur facing heat is Shivsrushti Cooperative Housing Societies Association Limited which was registered in 1968 and had 39 cooperative housing societies.

Though the GR was issued in 2007, it is being sent to societies on land the collector’s office allotted as far back as the 1960s and ’70s.

According to housing activists, the government resolution did not exist when the lands were allotted by the collectors and agreements were signed with housing societies in the 1960s and 1970s.

Recently, a notice has been issued by the collector asking for reasons as to why it had not completed construction of buildings within two years of allotment of land back in the 1960s.The societies were even asked to submit hand over details as well.
