No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Jan 31, 2013

Garbage dumpingThe new contractors hired by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) were initiated to start the work from December 1. But the contractors have failed to keep up their word.

The contractor was expected to begin work in five packages coming under the Yelahanka zone. But due to inadequate manpower and machinery, the work could not get started. The contractor was supposed to have 888 pourakarmikas, 717 pushcarts and 91 auto-tippers, while they had only 220 pourakarmikas, 23 auto-tippers and 20 pushcarts. BBMP Commissioner alleged that it was very important for the new contractors to prove that they have the requisite men and machinery before taking up the work.

Garbage disposal in the city has been split into 79 packages. Out of 79 packages, 52 packages were bagged by B.V.G. India Pvt. Ltd. But the contractor has not yet started functioning in 40 packages, so the BBMP council decided to scrap 40 packages from the contractor. BBMP counsel representing the case in the high court, asked the court not to extend time for BVG and also asked to retender the solid waste management packages.

BBMP officials have already started with the retendering package working where contracts have not been put into operation. The BBMP commissioner said that dumping garbage in mandur will continue for three or four months untill they get alternative place. But the question is Will the Mandur villagers allow BBMP to dump the garbage?

BBMP is also planning to set up scientific waste processing plants at Togarighatta and Arudi. BBMP higher official said that it is better to recycle all the waste and only inerts and debris should be sent to landfills.

Yediyur corporator accused the top party leaders of selling off parcels of HMT land illegally which the leaders took objection to allegations. The council was delayed for three hours after the ruckus.

BBMP is thinking of imposing an improvement fee from property owners in revenue pocket. It is expected to fetch the Palike over Rs 400 crore. Earlier, the proposed improvement fee was in the range of Rs 250-350 per sqm. but now BBMP is going to collect improvement fee of Rs 550 mper sqm was stayed by the high court after builders approached it.

Revenue pockets are those areas where residential plots have been carved out of agricultural land with land use conversion, but without approval from the city development authorities.
