No Comments Sub Category:Community,Municipality Posted On: Sep 22, 2010

Bhanupriya a first semester student at BMS Engineering College came under the wheels of a speeding private bus as she tried to avoid a pile of garbage. She lost her life because of an indifferent garbage contractor, who had let the trash pile up on the road. The proof of the contractor’s guilt was confirmed shortly later when the pile of garbage was removed and the place left clean.

B Bhanupriya was on the way to her college after dropping her father D V Badrinarayan at Poornima Theatre junction on Lalbagh Road at around 7.10 am and  continued to college. On the busy Krumbigal Road near Lalbagh, Bhanupriya had braked suddenly to avoid the garbage but the  speeding private bus knocked her down from behind. She died on the spot. The bus driver fled the scene, but the police have seized the vehicle and have registered a case.

The contractor has to be held responsible for this girl’s death says residents. As soon as the garbage contractor came to know of the incident and the implications, he had the garbage removed from the pavement within an hour. The contractor and the BBMP who has engaged him, should be made responsible for the girl’s death and prosecuted says residents.

Residents of VV Puram pointed out that the turning was an accident spot, but ward corporator S Anil Kumar played it down. He said the accident happened when there was no garbage. She tried to avoid a pit at the junction dug by Bescom. But neighbouring Siddapura ward corporator Udayshankar, who visited the spot immediately after the accident, said garbage was definitely the cause.

Udayshankar pointed out that the garbage collection centre was in Mavalli earlier and it was close to the corporator’s house. It was shifted to Krumbigal Road three months ago after he became the corporator.

Bhanupriya is the only daughter of Badarinarayana and Kokila, both BHEL employees. Her relatives said she was a bright student and had got the engineering seat on merit this year. Bhanupriya had joined BMS only 20 days ago. She was a meritorious and bright student and had secured a very good rank in CET. For Badrinarayan it was his last journey with his daughter. It was shocking news for Badrinarayan and Kokila (Bhanupriya’s mother).
