GHMC sends distress notices to tax defaulters
Hyderabad- With just few days left for the financial year to complete, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is applying all kind of strategies to collect tax dues from property tax defaulters.
So far, the corporation has collected Rs 634 crore as against the target of Rs 850 crore. Few of the tactics adopted are demand notices, red notices, counselling by senior officers, seizing of movable properties, etc.
The citizens are not using the opportunity to clear their tax dues despite the government has refrained penal interest on arrears and tax for the year on or by March 31, 2013. Thus, the civic authorities have started sending ‘distress notices’ to defaulters under section 269 of the GHMC Act.
In the past three months, around four lakh red notices have been sent to property tax defaulters. The corporation officials have seized vehicles and other movable properties of defaulters. The website page of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation now also displays the names of defaulters above Rs 5,000. They have also put posters with names of big defaulters and their arrears at several places in the city.
The authorities can seize the immovable properties once the notices are sent. Around 10,000 notices were sent within the Abids circle (Circle eight) which includes 500 distress notices on tax defaulters.
The Serilingampally South circle (circle one) has collected 76 percent of the demand so far (Rs 51.71 crore). The Khairatabad circle (circle ten) has collected 45 percent of the total demand (Rs 157 crore). This circle includes upmarket areas like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Ameerpet and Somajiguda.
Likewise, the Secunderabad municipal circle and LB Nagar circle has earned Rs 58 crore and Rs 48 crore respectively. Charminar (circle five) among the municipal circles, has collected the lowest amount worth Rs 11.9 crore which is only 18 percent of the demand.
According to a senior GHMC official, the total property tax collection is expected to reach Rs 700 crore by March 31, 2013.
