GHMC adopting new ways to collect property tax from defaulters
Hyderabad – The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has adopted few measures to compel property tax defaulters to pay up. Now they can capture or grab your vehicles and other movable properties if you are one among them.
After the scrutinization of property tax initiated in 2013, GHMC officials has collected an amount of Rs 402 crore within 36 days. As financial new year is approaching, the officials are doing their best to reach the target (Rs 934 crore) for 2012-13.
The officials of circle 9 seized an Alto car few days back. The owner of this car has evaded Rs.3,48,969, Rs.75,402 and Rs.1,83,726 respectively on three of his properties in Vidya Nagar.
Earlier, GHMC officials had seized computers from shopping malls and forced the owners of business developments to pay tax. They usually do this when the owner or businessman has no political connections.
According to the sources, the properties of State government and Central government are also in the list of property defaulters. The total property tax arrears for the State government amounts Rs.883.98 crore. It includes Rs.812.04 crore for the financial year 2011-12 and Rs.71.94 crore for 2012-13. But till yet only Rs.141.41 crore has been paid which means that a big balance of Rs.742.57 crore is still to be paid.
The total property tax arrears for the Central government amounts Rs.11.83 crore. It includes Rs 6.04 crore crore for the financial year 2011-12 and Rs.5.79 crore for 2012-13. But till yet only Rs 3.45 crore has been paid which means that Rs 8.38 crore crore is still to be paid.
GHMC generated around Rs 641 crore in the financial year 2011-12. For the current financial year, till now they have generated only Rs.532 crore which is very far from their target. This means that the remaining amount should be collected within one month.
On February, 25, 2013, GHMC commissioner organised a meeting to review the top defaulters in Hyderabad city. Senior officials were given responsibility to collect property tax from these defaulters with utmost personal attention.
After knowing the issue of cheque bounce, the GHMC commissioner has directed the officials to soon seize the reception, outpatient block, directors’ room and movable properties of Medwin Hospital.
