Go green go cycling: DDA to launch cycle-sharing system in Dwarka
Dwarka in southwest Delhi in the next one-and-a-half years is going to witness India’s first comprehensive cycle-sharing system. It will cover the entire sub-city spread over approximately 65 square km with 300-400 stations. Each station will have about 10-20 cycles so that people can get a cycle for Metro stations, bus stands, market places and residential pockets.
Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has the responsibility to implement the project. A tender has been floated to select the vendor. Urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu held a review meeting on Wednesday and asked the officials to take the necessary steps to make this project a success. As of now some isolated projects for cycle hiring have been undertaken in the capital.
DDA has already signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Centre for Green Mobility (CGM). An official made it clear that there will be cycles for children, men and women. The whole idea is to provide first and last mile connectivity. This means a person will have access to a cycle within a few hundred meters from his/her residential colony, workplace or market.
Anuj Malhotra of CGM, which is helping DDA in this project, stated that the focus is not on total number of cycles, but to have more number of cycle stations. His team is designing the project in such a manner that one can get a cycle station at a distance of every 300-400 meters. Hence if there is a breakdown, the cyclist can reach another station after 5-10 minutes’ walk.
