‘Government bodies’ biggest tax defaulters

Porperty taxIn order to recover property tax, the south Delhi municipal corporation has decided to attach their bank accounts. A senior officer of SDMC said, this action will be taken by this weekend.

Strict action will be taken on Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) which owes Rs 85 crore as property tax to the civic body. Along with DIAL, Power generating unit NTPC and India’s premiere techno financing institution in urban development HUDCO also owe a huge amount of tax to the corporation. According to the official, these agencies collectively owe Rs 1,150 crore as tax.

Last week, SDMC has seized all the bank accounts of DDA to recover Rs 746 crore. Officials report that, the government agencies are the biggest defaulters of property tax. Government agencies like NTPC and HUDCO never paid the tax despite owning a large chunk of properties in Delhi‘s prime locations.

Few other agencies like CPWD, NDSC, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University also fall in the defaulters list. South Delhi Mayor, Savita Gupta has directed the Municipal Commissioner to take action against the tax defaulters.

The total due from these agencies are – TPC owes Rs 112 crore followed by DIAL with total dues of Rs 85 crore, HUDCO owes Rs 84 crore while NDSC owes Rs 82 crore, CPWD owes Rs 35 crore, and JNU and Delhi University owe Rs 3 crore each as property tax.

According to sources, the corporation has collected around Rs 370 crore as tax, but over Rs 200 crore is still pending to collect. The main aim of SDMC is to increase the property tax collection from Rs 581 crore in 2012-13 to Rs 702 crore next year.
