Gradient improvement work by NHAI
To bring in relief for the commuters, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up gradient improvement work following gridlock at the Nanthoor junction, the junction of two National Highways 17 and 31 even during non-peak hours.
Due to steep gradient at the circle in the junction, it was a difficult task especially for heavy vehicles moving from Mahaveer Circle on NH 66 towards Udupi.
The problem in this junction was that it was a no signal junction and the vehicles from city moving towards NH 31 used to move haphazardly preventing the heavy vehicles from NH 66 to apply brakes at the gradient and stall.
NHAI officials said that there was a plan for an L-shaped flyover in this junction under Port Connectivity Project, but the space was a problem. So they dropped the plan and the flyover has been removed from the purview of the project. The chairman Road Safety Sub-Committee, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said that Nanthoor Circle is one of the traffic circle in the universe. He also complained about other circles also.
Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) Circle problem is unique as it is oval shaped as opposed to circle. He also observed that the unauthorized encroachments by a firm and litigation filed by an eatery are the main cause of problem here. The chairman Road Safety Sub-Committee, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said that district administration should take stringent action against them since this junction is threat for life of commuters.
Padil junction on NH 48 which is a newly built junction is a disaster of design by NHAI. It posses great danger not only to vehicular traffic but also for pedestrians.
