The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has framed guidelines which will be distributed to the public. The State Government has appealed to the people to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly way by opting for unpainted idols. Police commissioner Shankar Bidari said it is mandatory for all organizers of Ganesh functions in public places to follow these guidelines.

Guidelines for Celebration

  • Statues shall not be installed in densely populated areas.
  • Devotees, who install idols, shall obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from BBMP, fire department and the traffic police. Further, the police station concerned must be intimated about the date, time and place of idol immersion in writing. Also, the devotees must stick to the police guidelines strictly.
  • Crackers and other explosives that pose a threat to public health shall not be used.
  • Loudspeakers should not be installed near educational institutions, hospitals and houses where students and elder citizens live.
  • Microphones, loudspeakers, musical instruments and orchestras shall be played between 6 am and 10 pm.
  • Legal action will be taken against those who violate the rule, particularly if they play loud music after 10 pm.

  • Avoid sale and worship of idols colored with metal-based paints, providing impermeable lining for immersion tanks and spreading awareness through mass media.
  • If any VIP is participating in the celebrations, those who are in charge of the festival arrangements should inform the police beforehand.
  • The procession should bypass prayer halls, if any, in communally sensitive areas by taking alternative routes. If there is no other option, then the organizers must inform the police well in advance so that tight security can be provided.
  • Collecting funds for the festival by force is illegal and those who pester or threaten the public for donations shall be taken into police custody. Strict action will be taken against such offenders.
