Haryana to reserve 33% of land in each village for blackbucks
Chandigarh- In an effort to save the state animal blackbuck from extinction, the Haryana wildlife department has come up with a unique strategy wherein all village panchayats have been directed to reserve 33% area of common land in each village for the animal.
The department has taken this measure as an increasing number of deaths of blackbucks have been recorded in the past few years. During the period of 2007-2008, death of around 17 blackbucks was reported while the number abruptly rose to 82 in the year 2012.
More than half of them were killed by stray dogs, and in this regard, the Haryana government has even planned on a campaign to sterilise stray dogs in the region. Black bucks are found in 26 villages of Fatehabad district and are estimated to be 500 in number.
Another important reason for the decreasing number of blackbucks their vanishing habitats. Most of the village forests in the region have been used for cultivation purpose and as a result of this, the blackbucks get disturbed and stressed, which adversely affect their breeding. To overcome this situation of lack of habitat of these animals, the authority has come up with an effective method of protecting their dwelling place.
The idea to reserve 33% reserved land in each village of the state is to create grasslands with scattered indigenous trees, as preferred by blackbucks. Since panchayats provide land for developing habitats for wildlife, additional grants would be provided to the villages. Panchayats have been directed to create awareness about this among the villagers.
The Haryana government has also planned to develop a sanctuary/ special deer parks in Fatehabad district to conserve blackbucks. Sources said that the sanctuary for conserving blackbucks would be developed in 300 acres in Chand Kamaria village for which power corporation would be donating over Rs 17 lakh in the next five years for development work like tree plantation, construction of ponds, pump houses, watch towers, etc.
Black bucks are revered by the Bishnoi community in Haryana and Rajasthan. The deer species is on the endangered list of wildlife in India.
