House tax imposition must in urban Punjab: Governor to Mayor
Chandigarh- Residents of Chandigarh will have to start paying tax for their properties as the Mayor has been forced to impose property tax in the city.
The issue of imposition of tax in urban Punjab has been a hot topic in Punjab from past few months. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil seems to have made up his mind in imposing house tax in Chandigarh.
Patil has emphasised Mayor Subhash Chawla for the tax imposition and said that if MC does not take decision on imposing tax then the administration will impose it, and the rates would be higher. More funds are needed for the expansion and development of the city, he added.
Imposition of House Tax is one of the conditions of getting grants under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The Mayor after getting elected had said that he would not impose any new taxes in the city during his tenure. However he said Patil that MC house will take a decision with regard to imposition and calculation of property tax.
The Mayor is planning to discuss the matter in MC House and seek opinion of all the councillors and then decision will be taken.
Nominated councillors have prepared an agenda for imposing House Tax and the agenda proposes House Tax of Rupees one per square yard. Houses less than 5 marlas, EWS/LIG houses and houses in villages and colonies would be exempted from tax.
The Centre and the Administration have given several reminders to the MC for imposing tax over the past few months. It has also been reminded that grants to the city would be stopped if tax is not imposed soon. The Administrator has firmly told the Mayor that in case the MC keeps delaying the issue and Administration is made to impose tax directly, then the rates could be higher than what would be imposed if the civic body decides on its own.
But the elected representatives are opposing the imposition of taxes saying that taxes that are already imposed should be properly collected before imposing any new taxes.
