Hyderabad metro to get old power supply system
Hyderabad- The Hyderabad Metro rail is finally sticking to age-old overhead power line system called AC Traction because they don’t have skilled engineers to adopt modern Third Rail technology of power supply for the train.
This modern technology is very prevalent in Europe where power supply line is positioned in between the tracks and supplies 750 volt DC voltage. While in traditional line system the power lines are placed overhead which runs along the track and supplies 25 KV AC.
This project under first private-public partnership (PPP) mode initially publicised to follow global standards. But a senior official in Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) explained that there is shortage of trained and skilled engineers to apply this modern trend across globe. People must be trained to adopt this technology in future.
After long discussions with experts and studying the power systems of some existing metro lines, they decided to go for a safer option. However, both Delhi and Bangalore have successfully used Third Rail system technology. The surprising part is that L & T has taken charge of Hyderabad metro rail project and still there are no satisfying answers from the concerned authorities regarding this matter.
Not forgetting to mention that the Third Rail system is cost effective, minimizes maintenance and moreover it looks elegant as compared to the traditional one. The Third Rail system costs over 25 % less than the AC Traction system.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) authorities is giving first priority to safety of passengers. They also explained that AC Traction is cost effective in terms of energy consumption because DC is more expensive than AC. Also rolling stock (train set including engines and bogeys) with higher passenger capacity of AC Traction is more than the Third Rail system.
AP Transco is assigned to supply uninterrupted power to railway traction and also stations and depots. The metro project requires total amount of 75 MW of power a day. And AP Transco will supply 130 KV power, which will be scaled to 25 KV for the traction and 35 KV for stations and depots.
