Hyderabad Water Tanker Suppliers gives priority to Commercial Customers

No Comments Sub Category:Community,Municipality Posted On: Jul 15, 2011

Due to the high demand and Hyderabad city is reeling under a water crisis, demand for water tankers is almost on par. As monsoon continues to play truant and water supply remains erratic, the wait for water tankers is becoming longer. Some residents also allege that priority is being given to commercial customers who are paying a much higher price.

The problem, which is massive in several parts of the core city, worsens in the outskirts in areas like Kukatpally, Miyapur, Alwal, and Malkajgiri, among several others, where it is taking a minimum of five days to deliver a tanker.

In Alwal, a resident said that a tanker was booked 10 days ago but has still not been delivered. Making matters worse is Alwal’s water supply, which is once in five days. A Kukatpally resident shares how reminders haven’t helped in getting his building the tanker that was booked three days ago.

At the receiving end are not only residential areas but even hospitals. Last week, Niloufer Hospital postponed many surgeries because of poor supply from the Water Board. The hospital then placed an order for water tankers but was made to wait for two ‘excruciating’ days before the tankers showed up.

With the Water Board increasing the tanker charges for commercial establishments from Rs 650 to Rs 1,030 (10,000 litres) residents allege that priority is being given to commercial customers.

The Water Board has mapped Hyderabad in 16 divisions and has over 100 water tanker filling stations. The Water Board’s tankers are making anywhere between 4,000 and 5,000 trips a day in the city. Due to the high demand, delivery period is also stretching, ranging anywhere between a minimum two days to five days currently.

“We have 20 tankers and get 400 calls a day. Each tanker makes 8 trips on an average,” said an official, admitting that more than half of the calls remain unattended.
