Illegal Dumping Sites traced in Mumbai
The civic officials in Mumbai have found to be running loss to effectively follow up the waste disposal system, nearly 6,000 odd tones of waste that can be re-cycled and also the non-degradable that are dumped frequently. The sites where the dumping is encouraged is traced out to be illegal. The dearth waste being dumped in the sites have been found that those sites were allotted for different purposes rather than for dumping wastes. This has increased the rate of pollution ending up with the city seen untidy. An official of the Solid Waste Management department reported saying that the private contractors are finding tough time transporting the dumped waste to the sites which are very far off from the main city henceforth they have cultivated a practice of dumping these wastes in the open drains, road sides, open sites and barren land in the main city instead.
Allover the city’s waste generation has estimated that Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will witness 50% increase in near future. Deonar site which is one of the dump yard, is expected to hold another 2,000 tonnes of weight and also the same with the similar sites like Kanjurmarg and Mulund would hardly bear 1,000 odd tonnes of waste that too only for couple of years. The MMRDA and BMC departments have come up to the conclusion to add on few more dumping sites for the welfare of the city as well as the residents of Mumbai. Until now the city corporation has traced nearly 150 illegal dumping sites and unofficial estimation is said to cross more than 500 sites.
