Justice NK Mehrotra’s team unearthed Multi-crore land scam in U.P
On Tuesday the lid of a multi-crore land scam was blown off. Uttar Pradesh lokayukta, justice (retd) NK Mehrotra was the one who took this step. He wrote to the district magistrates (DMs) of seven districts and he asked for the reports on allotment of land in dubious deals in their areas.
A nexus between the district officers and the real estate developers in Lucknow, Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Agra, Mathura and Barabanki districts was found. A preliminary investigation by the lokayukta’s office detected this nexus and alarmed the Lokayukta.
Justice (retd) NK Mehrotra stated that he has received a complaint of violation of revenue rules in Mathura. On inspection he found that in 2008, the then sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) had changed the land-use of five hectares of land. This change was done from agricultural to inhabited lands and it was allotted to a builder to construct flats.
The officers changed the land-use from inhabited to agricultural and vice-versa to suit the builders’ needs. This was found to be the common pattern by the officers and the lokayukta’s office is fuming about it.
According to rules, it is the responsibility of the Board of Revenue to see that land records are properly maintained. This is something that has not been done in most of the districts. Mehrotra also mentioned that the corrupt officers and builders took benefit of this loophole to make money.
