Karnataka High Court seeks Report on Lakes
The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the six-member committee to submit its report by February 28, 2011. The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna had constituted the committee while hearing a batch of public interest litigation seeking directions to the government for preservation and restoration of lakes in and around Bangalore.
High Court directed the six-member committee headed by Justice N K Patil, the Chairman of High Court Legal Service Authority, to submit its report by Feb 28. The commissioners of Bangalore Development Authority and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, secretaries of Lake Development Authority and Karnataka Slum Clearance Board and chief engineer of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board are the other members of the committee. The Authority had been earlier told to chalk out a plan for preservation of lakes in the City.
High Court was hearing public interest litigation seeking directions to the government for preservation and restoration of lakes in and around Bangalore. The petitioners alleged that the State government had failed to consider the report of Laxman Rao Committee on developing lakes in the City. They had further contended that several builders and private parties have encroached the catchment areas of the lakes.
