Kochi likely to become a ‘metropolitan city’
Kochi- Kerala government is keen to get the status of “metropolitan city” to the state’s commercial capital.
The state government has favoured the Greater Cochin Development Authority’s proposal to form a Metropolitan Development Authority (MDA), including municipalities in neighbouring districts.
A recent survey revealed that Kochi alone has met the exacting standards of available infrastructure and facilities apart from population.
A 100-day programme by the Kochi Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (KMRDA) would be taken forward by the state government. In this way, various advantages for the speedy development of the city would be exploited and discussed. The Greater Cochin Development Authority has already submitted a draft in this regard.
Later, the Kerala government referred this to the chief town planner for his comments. It was observed that KMRDA fails to notice around 4574.86 sq km of area which is a home for around 46.57 lakh population. Following this the town planner amended the draft and proposed inclusion of an additional 2033.27 sq area into proposed KMRDA. He included areas surrounding Kochi though belonging to different districts, like Kodungalloor, Mala, Piravom, Angamaly, Perumbavoor, Kolenchery, Thalayolaparambu, Cherthala and Vaikom for the development of Kochi’s adjacent areas which included an additional 34.39 lakh population.
Likewise, the Corporation has also prepared a plan in this regard as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission project since the villages of Kerala are fast merging with the cities.
In the meantime, a city development plan for Kochi and neighbourhood as part of JNNURM project was developed by the Kochi Corporation. It seems that rapid urbanisation will be the city’s major advantage.
The port of Kochi being a prominent trade center, all the districts of Kerala and a few in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka look to the port of Kochi and Vallarpadam container terminal for conducting trade and commercial activities.
Adding to the attraction are the emerging IT hub of Kakkanad, the international airport and peaking trade and commerce in the central business district. Besides these, Cochin Shipyard, industrial hubs of Aluva and Eloor, proposed Smart City and rail, water and air transport gateways are also major attractions in the vicinity.
