DMRC proposed two metro routes for Nagpur
Nagpur- The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC ) suggested two metro routes for the Nagpur metro rail project.
In this regard, a presentation was given by DMRC officials to Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on January 22, 2013. The suggestion took the progress of Nagpur metro to a new phase. As per the presentation, DMRC suggested North-South and East-West as two possible routes.
The North- South route will cover distance from Kamptee Road Transport Plaza to Mihan. While the North- South route will start from Central Avenue to Hingna. NIT Chairman asked for a detailed report of these two routes which will be submitted within 10 to 15 days by DMRC.
In the year 2002, a survey conducted by L&T Ramboll proposed the route from Transport Plaza to Mihan route. In the year 2010, the Chief Minister announced the tentative route of first phase from Sitabuldi to Mihan which would be further extended to Butibori.
The proposed routes by DMRC was based on five surveys which were conducted in the Nagpur city. From May 2012 to July 2012, DMRC performed various tests like screen line volume count, turning volume count, outer cordon, parking and door-to-door surveys.
During the presentation, the DMRC officials elaborated about the surveys performed which resulted in these two routes. The officials highlighted traffic flow as a key factor in determining the routes. The proposed routes will give enough freedom to many people to travel by public transport vehicles on that route.
Nagpur Improvement Trust is waiting for the detailed project report (DRP) to be submitted by DMRC. Then comes the finance which is promised by the centre government. The state government is relieved till the centre government gives 60 percent cost of the project.
The Nagpur Metro Rail Project is carried out by Nagpur Mass Rapid Transit Company (NMRTC) with Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) nodal body for it. The other partners involved are Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC).
The estimated cost of these routes is around Rs 10,000 crore. The fund to be generated for this project is divided as follows- 60 percent by Central government, 25 percent by state government and the rest 15 percent will be funded by the four partners.
