Kolkata West City project gets relief
Kolkata- The Chief Minister of West Begal has decided to give the last piece of land (55.401 acres) to the Kolkata West International City (KWIC) project.
KWIC project is into legal cases for missing deadline. KWIC project is an international satellite township development across 390.2 acres. It is located on Howrah-Amta Road, just off Kona Expressway (NH 6).
This project in Kolkata marked the foray of Indonesian Salim Group into the state but they left after the severe violence occurred in Nandigram.
This project was earlier a joint venture involving the Salim Group and Singapore-based Prasoon Mukherjee of the Universal Success Group. Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) leased out 377.165 acres for Rs 91,82,73,000 to KWIC. This in turn resulted in the hand over of land power into the hands of the Chief Minister. The project plan was to build 6,100 bungalows, three IT parks and other amenities such as schools, hospitals and shopping malls.
According to the sources, KMDA has decided to hand over the last piece of land to KWIC. This decision was taken at a meeting held on February 21, 2013. As per the documents, only 100 acres of land have been utilized out of 316.929 acres handed to them. This means that about 216.929 acres are lying vacant.
The documents also said that KWIC has demanded possession of 60.236 acres of land which also include allotted land (7.3 acres) to running industries and those running in court cases (10.3 acres). Therefore, it is placed before the authority for taking decision whether possession of 55.401 acres of land including encroached area of 9.78 acres will be handed over to KWIC.
Meanwhile, customers of KWIC have also filed a case against the project promoters who failed to deliver the residential units on time. The customers and president of KWIC Buyers’ Welfare Association are not happy with the decision of the government of handing over the land to this controversial project.
The customers were promised to get to move in flats in 2008 but the construction work at the sites did not even start by that time. The builders had collected almost 80 to 100 percent of payments by July 2008. Some flats handed over are having legal dispute over built-up area.
