Korattur, Chennai lake project to start soon

Chennai- Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will soon launch a new project in the western part of Chennai.

This effort by JNNURM is taken to alleviate flood in areas located downstream of Korattur lake.

The residents of Chennai are surprised and happy too because the streets here get flooded every monsoon. Due to undefined route for the surplus course, residents of  Kadhirvedu, Madhanangkuppam and Surapet suffer from high floods. The situation is so worse in rainy season that water level reaches to knee.

Thus Water Resources Department has planned to improve the surplus course of the water body in Korattur and link it to Madhavaram tank. This channel is of 2.6 km long and runs along residential localities. The cost of this project is worth Rs 25.65 crore.

To transmit excess water to Madhavaram tank, a box culvert of four metres wide and two metres high will be constructed for a distance of 770 metre along service roads of Chennai bypass road near Kadhirvedu. Water Resources Department is also planning to construct two bridges across the surplus course on Kadappa Road near Madhanangkuppam and near Vinayagapuram. Since a portion of Kadappa road is washed away, people residing nearby will have to take a bypass of minimum of seven km to reach Ambattur.

According to the officials flood protection walls would be constructed wherever the bund of the waterway is weak which in turn will strengthen bund of Madhavaram tank. Currently, the project is delayed due to protests against land acquisition. It is expected to complete in August or September 2013.
