Land acquisition for Chennai Metro extension may begin in December
With the Centre’s requisite approval to the Phase-I extension of the Chennai Metro Rail expected in the near future, the land acquisition process for the Metro extension project will likely be commenced by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited in the coming months.
The Phase-I extension of Chennai Metro Rail involves a 9-km stretch between Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar at Tiruvottiyur. The total cost of the Metro extension project, as per the estimates, will be Rs 3,001 crore.
The extension of Chennai Metro Rail will essentially ensure that people residing in the northern suburbs of the city can also avail the benefits of the Metro network.
According to the details shared by the officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the approval for the 9-km stretch is expected soon. Revealing that preliminary work with regard to sanctioning the extension has already been initiated, the officials said that the process of acquiring land for the extension will likely be commenced in December 2014.
In an official statement released in connection with the imminent approval of the Phase-I extension of Chennai Metro Rail, the officials said: “We may get the approval soon. The Centre has asked for more information. It may shortly go for the Cabinet’s approval.”
