CMRL to operate and maintain metro
Chennai – The Chennai metro rail project will be operated and maintained by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) only.
According to the Managing Director of Chennai metro, CMRL called for international competitive bids to outsource operation and maintenance work of Chennai metro project. But now they have dropped this idea and decided to do it on its own.
MD added that the company had been working on ‘offloading’ O&M on a private operator from past one and half years. This would escalate the cost of the project resulting in rejection of the idea.
This Rs 14,000 crore metro rail project in Chennai is a joint venture between the Tamil Nadu Government and the Government of India. The MD pointed out financial issues related to the project when outsourcing would be done.
Currently, the company is training graduate engineers of Indian Institute of Technology – Madras. As per an official, now the operation and maintenance will be taken care by a division of Chennai Metro. This division will recruit eligible technical and skilled personnel required for rail-based public transport infrastructure.
As per plan initiated by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC), the Chennai metro rail phase I will be of two corridors. The First, starts from Washermenpet and ends at the Chennai International Airport covering a distance of 23.1 kms with 11 underground and six elevated stations. The second corridor starts from Chennai Central Railway Station and ends at St.Thomas Mount covering a distance of 22 kms with nine underground and eight elevated stations.
Thus these two corridors in total will cover a distance of 45 kms and metro rails generate over 30 skilled jobs per kilometre of operation. This means that around 1,350 technically qualified people would be required for this project.
The operation and maintenance work of metro in Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore are also carried by themselves. While public-private partnership (PPP) model is implemented in Hyderabad and Mumbai successfully. The private companies who tied for metro project in Hyderabad and Mumbai are Larsen and Toubro and Reliance respectively.
