Land acquisition plan at Thiruvananthapuram is opposed by people’s forums

Comments Off Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Jun 07, 2012

highwayThe National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a notification for widening of national highways to 45 meters in the district.

The coordination committee of people’s forum had opposed the decision stating that this decision will help the land mafias in those areas.

According to the group, widening of roads up to 30 meter will be enough and the lands were already acquired.

One of the committee member said that according to the parameters of the International Road Congress, a lane should be 3.5 meter wide, which including all other requirements like median and paved shoulders would come to only 22 meters. If the highway be constructed scientifically, 30 meters is enough for a six-lane road.

The government has offered a slew of sops for those who are ready to handover the land for road widening. It includes six times the market value of land, three cents for the families which do not have any other land and whose annual income is less than Rs 75, 000 and bearing the expense for demolition of the house.
