L&T construction to build Mohali International Airport
Chandigarh - The construction work of Mohali International Airport which was on hold is now resumed with availability of sand and gravel.
The work was halted since Punjab and Haryana governments had banned mining in the states few months back. This created a shortage of material for construction which in turn resulted in increased price of gravel.
According to sources, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had assigned the construction work of apron and taxiways at the Mohali International Airport to a Bangalore based company, Vishal Infrastructures Limited with a time period of 15 months at a cost of Rs 30 crore. But the shortage of materials forced the company to leave the work undone. Now Larsen & Toubro (L&T) construction will take the charge to complete the work at airport in two and a half years.
The deadline of this project has been extended from November 2012 to November 2014 and L&T construction will hopefully lay the apron and taxiways by January 2013. Solar panels will be built in four phases, out of which work on one phase has started. For this purpose, AAI has sanctioned Rs 500 crore, out of which Rs 450 crore will be utilised to construct the only single terminal on the first phase.
