Lulu Mall in Kochi: Asia’s largest shopping mall

Lulu MallKochi- Lulu Mall, Asia’s largest shopping mall has become the hottest shopping destination of the city. The Mall sprawls across 2.5 million square feet of space and is loaded is world class amenities and facilities. Located at Edapally junction, the mall is constructed at a cost of Rs 1,600 crore.

UAE based Lulu group opened its first mall in India on March 10, 2013. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and opposition leader V.S. Achuthanandan was the chief guest.

Amenities and Facilities

The mall houses more than 360 outlets which includes food courts, family entertainment zones restaurants and a nine-screen multiplex. It also houses first McDonalds restaurant of the state, new concept of Ice Rink, coffee shops, dine-in outlets, prayer halls and baby care centres. The mall can accommodate around 300 national and international brands which would also attract foreign tourists.

A special area has been earmarked for the promotion of Kerala products and handicrafts. The mall can hold up to 1 lakh customers at a time. It has 16 pairs of elevators escalators and travelators.

The mall has been designed by UK based consultants WS Atkins with parking capacity for 3,000 cars. Some other facilities include pharmacy,money exchange counters, holiday desk ATM a Federal Bank branch.

Attraction for children and youngsters

Besides nine PVR cinemas which have a total capacity of 2,250 seats, entertainment zones, colorful and lively rides in the mall is attracting more children. They are also lots of fun activities like rock climbing, go karts etc which is an added attraction for children.

Property Tax generation

The per month power bill of the Mall is expected to be around Rs 1.5 crore. Kalamassery municipality recently collected Rs 2.75 crore as property tax which would increase to Rs 8 crore in next fiscal (including professional tax from the employees of the mall). It will be a major source of revenue for the city.

Traffic congestion

Although there is enough car parking facility offered by the mall, traffic snarls in Edappally. More policemen have been deployed to control traffic in the area. The U turn at the location has been removed and will soon have fencing to prevent people from jumping over it.

The district administration will soon come up some solutions to resolve chaotic traffic conditions at Edappally Junction. Owing to daily traffic problems, many people opine that concerned authorities and the company representatives did not have logical discussions over raising Asia’s largest mall.

Few residential projects within distance of 10 km from the mall are Dream flower Auriga (1 km), Trinity Crest (2 km), SFS Eternia Edapally (2.2 km), National Avenue (3 km), National Empress Garden (3 km) National Nandanam (3 km), Sunny Palace (3 km), Good Earth Elements (6 km), AC Emerald (7.5 km), AC Varsha (7.5 km), Silver Lawns (8 km) and many more.

The Lulu Group and EMKE Group managing Director M A Yusuf Ali is a Malayali and has plans to open more malls in the state. The mall is expected to generate 8,000 and 20,000 direct and indirect employment respectively.
