Mandur residents get irked as BBMP continues to dump garbage

Comments(3) Sub Category:Awareness,Bangalore,Civic Issues,Maintenance Posted On: Dec 13, 2012

Bangalore- Mandur residents are annoyed as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) continues unsystematic dumping of mixed garbage at the landfill without providing them adequate health services and drinking water as promised earlier.

Residents are exposed to health hazards as the garbage is being dumped unscientifically. Dangerous diseases like dengue, influenza and malaria have become common, alleged residents. The groundwater is getting contaminated and farm yields have been falling.

BBMP had promised to give a written undertaking stating that from January 1 the dumping of garbage in Mandur landfill will be stopped, but it failed to give. Also it has said that the number of garbage trucks reaching the landfill will be reduced by the end of December, but the number is not coming down.

Instead of following some quick measure to resolve the issue and helping out the residents, the authorities are dragging the residents, who try to protest against the civic body, to police stations. Even Section 144 has been imposed to make sure the dumping of garbage goes on smooth.

BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel claimed that weekly health camps are being organised at Mandur to provide health service to the residents. Spraying, fogging and high pressure deodorising are also being done in the area. He said that as long as garbage will be sent to Mandur, Sec 144 will be active.
