Mandur villagers ready for another protest against garbage dumping
While the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to extend the deadline to end dumping waste at Mandur, the villagers of Mandur are getting ready for another protest if in case the BBMP fails to keep their promise.
A member of the Mandur Gram Panchayat, said that the villagers have decided not to allow a single garbage truck into landfill after January 31 regardless of the cost. Three months ago a senior officials told the residents that the number of trucks will reduce by 150 in December last year and 75 by this January, but every day more than 100 trucks come and dump garbage at the landfill at night after 9pm.
Since 2005, residents staying there were facing health hazards and other problems. They said that they have done numerous meet with Palike which was of no use. The Health Minister who came to the village to inaugurate a hospital recently promised them to support in case if the BBMP does not keep its promise.
Three months have passed, villagers complain that Palike has not sent them an official letter explaining the future of the landfill. BBMP told the villagers that they want to extend the February 1 deadline by at least a week, but they have not agreed with their decision.
