Metro extension to take place in Kochi
Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu said that Centre would favourably consider plans to extend Kochi Metro to Tripunithura and Kakkanad. The minister assured Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) that the government would consider their request to allocate Rs 400 crore additionally in the current fiscal.
This year, Kochi Metro is looking for a budgetary support of Rs 879.22 crore from the Centre. The minister held a review meeting with parliament member K V Thomas, KMRL managing director Elias George and other senior officials regarding the progress of Metro project on Wednesday at Nedumbassery. The minister said that the government was inclined to accord clearance to these proposals.
The metro extension plan is necessary to ease the connectivity problem. The traffic problems rising in the cities have seen no relief. This has been a main reason why the union urban development minister is thinking about the extension of the connectivity of the Kochi metro. Once the budgetary support is accepted from the centre the work might start. The start of the work might start of from the year end or so.
