Mining ON, despite SC ban
Illegal mining renewal in Tauru and Nuh has started ringing alarm bells in the region. Environment activists blamed the state government and local administration on Monday, for their disappointment to act inspite of Supreme Court orders of ban on such activities and pressurized them to take the case to the apex court or the National Green Tribunal before Wednesday.
S P Gupta, chairman of NGO People’s Voice said, with the support of local people, mining mafia and anti-social elements have taken charge of this illegal activity. We have previously provided sufficient facts and information to the local administration and top officials in Chandigarh; however the destruction has not stopped yet. Regardless of the director general of police and top officials assurances, the mafia is harming natural resources and greenery, he added.
Office bearer of the NGO, Vashisht Kumar Goel said they did not accept government’s argument regarding not being able to crack down on illegal mining because of police deployment for polls. He added, for immediate remedial actions as well as for contempt of court on Wednesday against all concerned officers (by name) for this illegal, immoral and contemptuous act, we are approaching SC/ NGT.
The NGO has informed that roads have been constructed illegally for transporting mining material, in its letter to the chief secretary. It also insisted that the vehicles used for mining and transportation of mining material should be impounded as they were operating without displaying registration numbers.
The state government has been suggested by the NGO to ask village sarpanchs to report instance of illegal mining to the police.
