MLAs oppose shifting of EWS slums

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Jan 25, 2013

slum dwellersThe BBMP’s plan of shifting the EWS slums on five acres of land each in Sarjapur and Iblur near Chandapura till their houses get constructed was opposed by the local MLAs and the public.

The builder who has got the tender to construct a mall and housing complex for the original slum-dwellers is set to start work soon.

It will take three years for the housing project to rehabilitate the evicted residents of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quarters to be ready at Sooligunte, Sarjapur. This means the slum dwellers have to make their own arrangements during the interim period. They will have to live in rented houses in Bangalore. All 1,512 original dwellers of the EWS quarters (that collapsed in 2003) will be given houses in the same place, after construction by Maverick Holdings.

900 families to whom they have distributed biometric cards will be given houses on five acres of land in Sooligunte. The project would be completed in one-and-a half year and Rs 57 crore has been released by the State government.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had already handed over five acres to the KSDB in Sarjapur. KSDB is ready with the detailed project report to accommodate over 900 residents in five storeyd housing complex, who are not the original allottees of the EWS quaters at Ejipura. Once the housing complex is done and then it will be handed over to the BBMP for maintenance. The location is near the main road and is well connected. The houses are 90 percent subsidized and the beneficiaries will have to pay just Rs. 35,000.
