Mogappair west awaits sewage system for years
Chennai- For over a decade, the residents of Vellala Street in Mogappair have been seeking for an underground sewage system be built in the locality.
Residents’ associations had sought the help of Madras high court and used RTI appeal in order to start the project soon.
As there is no choice, the residents are depending on private tankers to carry away the sewage and are forced to pay high charges. The condition is almost the same with the residents of Karnan Street and Sathalwar Street too. Private tanker operators frequently keep hiking the charges and the residents have no other way than to shell out money, alleged a resident.
Five years ago, the Madras high court had instructed Metrowater to accomplish the project immediately, but till date, nothing has been carried out.
Owing to sewage overflows, there are chances that underground water may get contaminated. And if the sewage is not cleared regularly then it would overflow on the streets creating mess.
Following the order of high court, the work of laying sewage lines is already in progress, alleged Metrowater officials.
