Monsoons likely to bring Rainfall woes in Chennai

No Comments Sub Category:Municipality Posted On: Oct 24, 2011

Residents in Chennai will have to reel under rainfall woes again as the Chennai Corporation does not seem to have taken any measures to provide adequate measures to tackle the crisis that follows soon after the monsoon. The roads in many parts of the city are in a state of sorry. Uncovered drains and cesspools figure in every stretch of the road. The Chennai Corporation has taken up the project of storm-water drain-laying works on nearly 534 km in a phased manner. The project was likely to be done by by October work on about 160 km of roads. However just 20 percent is completed at present. Ramanujam Street in T Nagar, Arterial Chamiers Road in Nandanam,Raji Street in Ayanavaram Bawa Road in Alwarpet and and Raghavendra Road, Dhandapani Road, Motilal Street are some of the places where work is still on.

The work is tediously slow which brings woes to the commuters as mud in these areas are dug out. Since the monsoon is drawing close it is likely that these pits will  be filled with water and mud,  also there might be increase in epidemics like malaria and chickengunya . Corporation officials are affirmative that they will be able to complete the work before the onslaught of monsoon, even though in many areas the restoration work is stopped for the last three months.
