Multi-level parking facilities to come up in Tamil Nadu
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has planned to create multi-level parking lots at a few stations. This came to the wake of the parking worries of the commuters. The good part of the multi-level parking lots is that they do not consume extra ground space and since the levels are stacked one above the other, more vehicles can be parked on the same ground area.
The project plan is chalked out. Initially, the stations will have only surface-level parking facilities on the elevated stretch. Once, the entire phase – I becomes operational by August 2016, the multi-level car parking lots may be created. According to the CMRL officials, this will help the travellers and their families and the commercial vehicle operators a lot.
Stations, including Koyambedu, CMBT, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, SIDCO and Alandur, on the first 10-km stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur would have ground-level parking lots initially. This is the initial phase of the project and if this is successful, then may be other stations can also be included in this plan.
The officials stated that CMRL has plans to have multi-level parking facilities later. The reason behind this move is that they do not speculate that they will have too much traffic at the initial stage with just one line. They may create them only after Phase-I is completed.
