Mumbai Metro master plan revised to link Mumbai, Navi Mumbai airports

The Mumbai Metro master plan has been revised by the Maharashtra Government. The decision to revise the Metro master plan has been taken by the government to ensure that the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and the proposed international airport at Panvel in Navi Mumbai are directly connected.

As a result of the revision, the Mumbai Metro master plan will now include a new Metro line which will provide direct connectivity between Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Navi Mumbai airports. The Metro plan already includes nine routes.

The newly-included route for the Mumbai Metro will run services from Andheri (East) — the current location for the Metro station for the Mumbai airport. On its way to the proposed new airport at Panvel, Navi Mumbai, the new line will take the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd route.

Ghatkopar is already connected to the Andheri airport through the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro, which was opened to public earlier this year. At Mankhurd, a Metro station will be constructed, as part of the proposed Metro-II line, to connect Mankhurd with Dahisar in western suburbs.

In an earlier proposal to directly connect Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Navi Mumbai airports, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) had proposed the Mankhurd-Panvel Metro link. However, the State government has decided to integrate the routes for the new line, so as to offer seamless connectivity between travellers of the two airports.
