Mumbai reeling under Inadequate Water Supply

No Comments Sub Category:Awareness,Community,Municipality Posted On: Oct 15, 2011

The residents in Mumbai are reeling under the acute shortage of water and for the past two months the problem has witnessed a drastic growth. The civic body has said that it did not have any option but to stop the supply of water because of restoration work which is in progress. Recently the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC) had inaugurated the Veravali-Yari road underground water tunnel and this project aims to improve supply in Jogeshwari and Andheri. However it failed to deliver its promise of 12 hours of nonstop water supply because of technical problems. The corporators have said that the failure to improve the water supply is because of the inadequate planning of the infrastructure by the administrations.

Though the population had seen a phenomenal growth, there has been no steps undertaken to provide adequate water supply. Surprisingly, the present water system was laid 15 years ago. The worst affected regions are the western suburbs, especially areas beyond Goregaon , and parts of the eastern suburbs like Mankhurd, Govandi and Chembur. These suburbs are some of the most populated suburbs in Mumbai with nearly 50 percent of the population dwelling in these areas, however the area receives a mere 36 percent water supply only. It should be noted that Mumbai has received good rainfall for a couple of years but in spite there are serious concerns regarding inadequate water supply to the residents all over the city.
