Narrow Rail Over Bridge brings woes to Commuters in Nagpur
Residents in Nagpur are left at loss as their traffic woes are continued to be unheard of by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). A narrow Rail Over Bridge (ROB) of just 4.5 meter width connects Maskasath to Itwari. In fact the room is just enough for one vehicle to maneuver through the road, vehicles on both ways have to wait long tedious hours for their turn. Even ambulance have to wait their turn to move through the road. The stretch is one of the busiest roads in the area and traffic jams are frequently seen. The problem can be sorted out with a wider ROB, however no steps have been taken in this matter.
Many residents and representatives from various organizations have complained to the authorities to sort out the matter. The NMC had recently forwarded a proposal of widening the ROB to the Central Government, under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Mission (JNNURM). The central government has sanctioned the widening of the ROB and had granted Rs 1.57 crore but no concrete steps have been taken so far.
Officials in the NMC have blamed the South Eastern Central Railways (SECR) for the delay. It said that the project could not hit the floor as the SECR had objected on the height of the bridge. The SECR have confirmed that it has objections with the height of the bridge as the structure will block the entrance of many buildings. Recently the height of the bridge has been increased from 5.87 to 6.25 by the SECR.
With the proposal still to hit the floor, motorists have to bear the burnt of the situation.
