New technology to tackle garbage menace

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Feb 06, 2013

Garbage recyclingDue to the unprecedented garbage crisis in the city, entrepreneurs are tapping the potential of technology where recycling is the mantra, to ease the burden on landfills.

Automatic garbage machine (AGM) is one of the solution that can process 500 to 1,500 kg of waste each day, using simple but effective techniques. The machine handles both wet and dry waste and comprises of a shredder unit and a bailing unit. It converts organic waste into rich compost and dry waste into reusable solid blocks of plastic and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

The machine is already in use for processing waste in the Belapu and Kaup Gram Panchayats of Udupi district. The machine was invented by Mr Nidhish Shetty a 40 year old entrepreneur. Recently, bagged the Amulya award 2012 under the patent filed category.

Shetty explains how the AGM machine works; the wet waste is placed on the conveyor belt of the shredder unit. Then, the shredded waste flows from the shaft into a pit where it is converted into compost within 10-15 days. The plastic waste or PET bottles, when fed into the bailing unit, compresses the volume of the bottles by 75 to 80 percent. They can then be sent to recycling units. The machine is easy to install, maintain and operate, he added.

Municipal corporation in Bangalore has already placed seven to eight orders. Shetty has got orders for the machines from two town municipal corporations in Mysore and Mandya districts, worth Rs 8 lakh and Rs 11 lakh respectively which will be installed by march 2013.

There are much demand for the machine from NGO’s, builders’ communities and apartment owners. Shetty is also planning to take his innovation to other states like Goa, Kerala, Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, the entrepreneur has not received much response from the city, although he is in touch with local bodies.
