NGT directs translocation of trees
In the wake of National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordering authorities to first consider translocation of trees, before allowing cutting of trees, the practice of trees translocation is set to start. Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is going to have some translocations as many as 50 trees to speed up the construction of 13 roads in different parts of the city.
Earlier translocation was not an option and agencies used to cut trees after getting permission from IMC for construction activities. In last one decade, IMC has not transplanted any trees, while hundreds of trees have been cut for developmental works in this period. This will be first time in recent past when IMC will go through the translocations of so many trees. The move is important as the city has just 85,294 trees as per tree census of IMC conducted recently on NGT directive.
The directive of translocations of trees will help in not reducing the number of trees. This is very much necessary keeping in mind about the fast depleting environmental resources. The NGT has taken a correct directive.
