NH-24 widening at stake
The widening work of highway NH-24 in Indirapuram is on stake, as proposed power substation might cause an obstruction.
The residents of Indirapuram have raised complaints for the construction as it is becoming a hindrance for them. Hence the National Green Tribunal has asked the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to specify the land they need in the area in future for construction.
Based on the complaints received from Gaur Green City RWA, the tribunal has issued notice to the ministry. According to the RWA, there is an urgent requirement of widening the highway as it will help to reduce the traffic congestion permanently. Meanwhile, the residents have also complained about the heavy traffic problems, although this widening work will destroy the green belt of that region.
Residents have complained about the issues and also denied further allotment of land for widening purpose of NH-24 or any other construction purpose. Around 40,000 sq m area has been dedicated for the construction of the substation by the Western UP Power Transmission Corporation Limited (WUPPTCL).
The construction work was pending since last July and a stay order was imposed by the the tribunal based on the complaints of the residents. Adding to this, the residents fear that the radiations emitted by the substation would effect their health.
Although RWA claimed that, according to the terms and conditions of the agreement between the power company and the UP state government, it should be mandatory to get clearance from the relevant road authorities, though till now no such permissions have been taken.
The council of RWA requested the ministry that they should complete its future plans for areas adjacent to NH-24, at least for the next 50 years, as this is a very important time to decide and determine if the substation should be built at the site.
While the power transmission company has claimed that they have received all relevant clearances before commencing their project, an engineer of UPPTCL commented that, for the construction of substation, clearances are not required from highway authority or the ministry. If the transmission lines are passing over the highway, then clearances will be asked from the highway authority.
