NMC serious about treatment of sewage

NMC third sewage treatment project will hopefully increase the sewage treatment capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant (STP) from 80 MLD to 200 MLD on PPP/DBFOT model in 2014. According to the sources the construction(two years), operation and maintenance (30 years) will be entirely in the hands of private operator with their own investment. The construction expenses will be paid by NMC after 2 years and can also earn money by selling the treated sewage water.
Urade gave details about the 200 MLD STP to be constructed on Bhandewadi. The sewage data available with the NMC from 2009 to 2011 proves that sewage has raised from 420 MLD to 510 MLD with increased amount of water supply from plant.
In 2007 the treatment capacity of the plant was 80 MLD which is still the same due to delay in starting the earlier two projects. The serious issue came into importance when Gosikhurd irrigation project was contaminated in 2009.
Thus the High Court in 2010, the High Court admitted suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) and started demanded civic body and other agencies to take initiative steps. This resulted in construction of STP at Bhandewadi with installed capacity of 130 MLD and is expected to complete in December 2013 with some delays.
