No land available as Landfill sites are full
“Firstly, there is no land available for building a landfill site; secondly there are other issues like activists and the green tribunal which have been creating steeplechases in the sites we try allot for the landfills.
The Delhi Development Authority is finding it problematic to allot land for a new landfill site. DDA vice-chairman Balwinder Singh told this newspaper that there is no land obtainable to set up a new landfill site.
The national capital produces more than 8,000 metric tonnes of waste everyday and its landfill sites at Ghazipur, Okhla, Narela and Bhalswa are already overflowing. The total area of these landfill sites is 160 acres. The biggest landfill site in Ghazipur can contain only 500 metric tonnes of waste per day.
Although waste management experts believe the DDA and the MCD should concentrate on segregation and new technology to treat the waste instead of looking for sites to create new landfills. Mr Singh said “The DDA is working towards finding two new sites for the same,” adding that the DDA is struggling to find a new site to accommodate the cumulative demand for landfill sites.
“The issue is more critical than finding new sites” is felt by Satish Sinha, associate director of Toxic Link, an NGO working towards improvement in waste management, Mr Sinha said “The landfills are already saturated. The problem is more innate, the city’s waste is ever increasing and the authorities need to concentrate more on the treatment of the waste. Technology plays an essential role in treatment of the waste, segregation and recycling of the waste is another major criterion which is unattended so far.”
