taxRajkot- Property tax payment has now become more stringent and no one can escape the payment. One of the first cities to have a unique property identification number for the property tax payment for commercial, institutional and residential units is Rajkot.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) will now have a unique identification number for all the owners using a Geographic Information System (GIS), which is a map-based information arrangement. This task by the city authorities was done through a comprehensive survey by chartering all the buildings in the city.

According to a municipal commissioner, they have all the information of the owners including the photographs of the building units. Also other details like the property which has not been assessed for property tax and buildings with later changes of designated use will also be readily available.

They have further completed the GIS-based survey and are now conducting a field survey of all the properties in Rajkot city. This task will be completed in six months and once the final validation survey is ready, each property in the city will have a unique number. Each property’s Property Identification Number (PID) will contain the corresponding house number along with the owner’s name, detailed address, water connection numbers, electricity details, the number of floors, usage/year of construction,  built-up and carpet area. This will be further followed by photographs of each building along with the property tax payment and town-planning related documents, details of the property.

He further stated that this method is the most comprehensive GIS database which has been first initiated by this city. This method not only covers the properties but will also contain data related temporary structures, trees, municipal and other service utilities. Interestingly this service will further help the civic body to mop up the property tax revenue as well.

As per the RMC officials, the usage of this database has helped them to increase the property tax collection from Rs. 120 to Rs. 160 crore per annum.

Apart from the property tax collection, this database is expected to help in disaster management too, since it consists of various data.
