Noida authority to upgrade sewage technology

Comments Off Sub Category:Cities,Civic Issues,Delhi-NCR,Maintenance Posted On: Mar 15, 2013

waterWithin the next two months, Noida authority will upgrade the two sewage treatment plants (STPs) located in Sector 50 and 54. The authority wants to make Noida a ‘zero discharge city’, so it has decided to upgrade the technology to the sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology.

This new technology will make sure that better quality of water is released that can be channelized for the irrigation as well as other purposes.

There are portions of the two STPs which are running on the obsolete Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) system.

As per official sources, Sector 50, Noida STP at present 25 MLD sewage is being treated through SBR technology while 34 MLD is being treated through UASB technology. Same way, at the sector 54 STP, sewage treated through SBR technology is 33 MLD while 27 MLD is being treated through UASB technology.

The capacity of the STP in the next phases will be increased by 27 million litres per day. Estimated budget for this project has been finalised at around Rs 100 crore and the design is undertaken after consulting IIT Roorkee.
STP upgradation will be completed by approximately within two years. After an analysis of effluent water at the STP located in Sector 123, the authorities decided to introduce the new technology at the STPs. This STP was built using the SBR technology.

As the new technology was introduced, it was noticed that the levels of organic pollutants in effluent water have gone down immensely. Moreover, lesser amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen and reduced odour characterized the water treated through SBR technology.

The capacity of STP which is located at Sector 123 is 35 MLD and fourth STP with a capacity of 50 MLD is located in Sector 168 is also expected to be commissioned soon.
